• Professor of Structural Engineering, University of Seville.
• Non-executive President Envision Group Spain 2022-
• Member of the Board of Directors of BEFESA 2022-
• He has been Secretary of State for Energy of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, in the Government of Spain from June 2018 to February 2020.
• President of the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), and member of the board of directors of the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI) 2018-2020.
• President of Abengoa between September 2016 and March 2017.
• From 2008 to 2015, he was Technical Secretary General of Abengoa, as well as advisor to the previous president on R&D and technology issues.​
• He has been responsible for the university system and R&D in the government of the Junta de Andalucía as General Secretary for Universities, Research and Technology (2004 – 2008).
• Vice-rector of the University of Seville (1990-1992) and director of its School of Engineering (1993-1998).
