In 1975 I finished my undergraduate degree in Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the UNAM and in 1981 I was awarded a PhD in Physics and Mathematics at the Academy of Sciences of the UNAM.
I was awarded a Ph.D. in Physico-Mathematical Sciences t the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In the same year I joined the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM as a researcher, where I continue to work as a researcher.
UNAM, where I continue working to date. In 1986 I was awarded the Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. In 1984, I became a Level I Researcher in the National System of Researchers, to which it has belonged since its foundation, currently I have the level of Emeritus Researcher of the SNI.
In 2001 I became a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and in 2018 of the Mexican Academy of Engineering.
I have made sabbatical stays as a visiting professor at Harvard University (Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences), USA, the University of Auckland (Geothermal Institute and Geology Department), New York, USA, and the University of Auckland (Geothermal Institute and Geology Department), New Zealand and at the University of Barcelona, Spain.
My projects have received support from: the European Union, CONACyT, DGAPA-UNAM, the Ministry of Energy and the Federal Electricity Commission to carry out studies on new methods for the exploration of new methods of exploration of natural resources, mainly geothermal energy.
I am currently working on geothermal exploration projects, permanent CO2 capture in geothermal reservoirs and geothermal energy geothermal reservoirs and the use of oil wells in the exploitation of geothermal energy.
To date, my total work is 102 research articles in peer-reviewed journals; 2 books; 3 book chapters; 3 maps of geothermal resources; and 3 maps of geothermal resources in the United States and Canada. Chapters in books; three maps of geothermal resources of the Mexican Republic and 42 refereed full-length articles.
My work has more than 2600 citations. In particular my work: ProlLedesma, R. M., Canet, C., Torres-Vera, M.A., Forrest, M.J., and Armienta, M.A., 2004, Vent fluid chemistry in Bahía Concepción coastal submarine hydrothermal system, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 137, p 311-328. Most Cited Author 2003-2007″ award.
In the aspect of human resources training, I have directed a total of 59 theses (L-41; M-14; D-4), in the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and the ESIA of the IPN, as well as in the Postgraduate Programs in Geophysics, Marine Sciences and Earth Sciences postgraduate programs at UNAM. I have taught more than 30 undergraduate and graduate courses. I have also
also taught short courses at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and at the University of San Carlos in Carlos University in Guatemala, with the support of UNESCO.
I have also coordinated numerous short courses on Natural Resource Exploration and Waste Management in Mining Operations, the XXV Latin American the XXV Latin American Course of Metallogeny UNESCO-SEG-SGA, at the Institute of Geophysics, UNAM and the Geothermal Exploration Course in the Los Azufres field with UNUIceland in November 2014. During my period as coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Geophysics (UNAM), it was transformed into a postgraduate program in Earth Sciences, of which I was the first Coordinator.
I coordinated the creation of the online course “Introduction to Geothermal Energy” in the platform Coursera, which currently has more than 20,000 registered students, and also the Specialization in Exploration also of the Specialization in Exploration and Exploitation of Geothermal Resources, which is taught at PUEI of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
In addition to my research and teaching work, I have given 120 talks and interviews for outreach and dissemination, and I have published 6 works of divulgation, among which is the book of the Fondo de Cultura Económica (Colección La Ciencia desde México – La Ciencia para Todos) with the title “El Calor de la Tierra”, which has three editions and five reprints of the first edition.
